Signing the Declaration of…Dependence?

It’s one of the most majestic documents in the world — the Declaration of Independence.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights…”

The drafting and signing of this document became the epicenter of historical shockwaves which have rocked the world from that day forward.

Just penning their names to it put the 56 signers of it at risk. All of us living in the United States of America today enjoy the benefits of their vision, courage, and sacrifice.

But…239 years after the 13 original colonies cast off British rule to begin a new nation, is it now time for us to declare afresh our DE-pendence — not upon a colonial ruler but upon Almighty God?

We believe the answer is a resounding “YES” — not just for us collectively as a nation but beginning with each of us as individuals.

In fact, both the Bible and history show that while our Creator God has indeed endowed us with certain rights, apart from surrender to and reliance upon Him our stewardship of those rights is fatally flawed.

In short, we botch our freedoms and privileges by going our own way rather than His (that’s called sin), and the consequences are catastrophic.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

Daily in workplaces across our land, CCA chaplains walk with people through the often challenging circumstances of life that call for a Power — in fact, a Savior — greater than any one of us. His Name is Jesus.

In the course of these ongoing relationships, our chaplains have the wondrous privilege of sharing with many the life-changing Good News of Jesus Christ and seeing their here-and-now as well as their eternity transformed forever.

Our chaplains help people experience the truth that “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)
