Discovering the Promises of GodLife happens every day. Sometimes you find yourself at the top of the world; at other times you may wonder who turned out the lights. So, where can you turn for comfort and encouragement in difficulty?

The Bible has a word for every season and every circumstance. Dr. Mark Cress, founder of Corporate Chaplains of America, has gathered and organized some of those key texts into a book called Discovering the Promises of God. Below, we have excerpted Scripture passages from each of the major headings, hoping to provide you with the hope and the help you need, whatever your situation.

Courage

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9

“Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!” – Psalm 27:14


Grief

“Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” – Nehemiah 8:10b.

“Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.” – John 16:22


Worry and Anxiety

“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?” – Matthew 25:6

Hope

Loss

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” – John 14:1-3

“Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance” – Psalm 42:5


Loneliness

“A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” – Proverbs 18:24

Peace

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” – Matthew 11:28-29

Wisdom

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” – Proverbs 9:10

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” – James 1:5


Fear

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling.” – Psalm 46:1-3


Stress
